No More Nursing

Today is a bittersweet day. It is the first day I will not be nursing Little Bit since he was born. We went the distance. We nursed for a whole year plus a few weeks for good measure. It was a wonderful experience. Snuggling my Little Bit and providing for him in this way was so deeply touching.

When I was pregnant I prayed over and over that we would have no trouble nursing. You know what? We didn't have any trouble at all. Little Bit even mostly weened himself. I had to initiate stopping the last three (morning, afternoon, and night night time) but he did the rest.

He was sucking on the Doctors finger as she pulled him from my tummy. He was a natural. He is also a natural at drinking milk it seems. This morning when I introduced his first morning with no Mommy milk he gulped down a whole sippy cup. So today is a bittersweet day. I am happy to be done but also very sad our special time is over.

  1. Exactly my experience. I nursed for a year and then a little and with heavy heart, I weaned. I'm so happy I was able to do it for as long as I did. And like you, I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to nurse...I was neurotic about it. And like your son, my son came out like a pro! :)

  2. I never made it to a full year but came close and I never thought it would make a big difference but its a big transition. I know the feeling of bittersweet.

  4. Oh that's such a bummer :( I remember that day as well... we survived, but it was so sad.

  5. I know just how you feel. I always felt like it was bittersweet because weaning also meant that they were growing up, that they weren't quite so dependent on mom, and that there would probably be a lot less snuggling. But each phase of life is really a joy. :)

  10. It's a hard transition in so many ways, but after a year and 9 months of sharing my body so much, it felt wonderful to have my body all to myself. I do miss that closeness, but I am loving the phase my little one is in now :)

  11. I dread the day mine weans. She's my last and the I sobbed on Christmas night knowing I'd not nurse another baby to sleep on Christmas. I'm sappy. My heart is sad for you. Its so bittersweet.

  12. Thank you everyone for the sweet comments. It has been hard. Little Bit is waking up at two am and crying hysterically. Yesterday milk and soothing worked. This morning Daddy had to do it and now he is back up at 5:30 wanting breakfast and in a terrible mood. I think he is starting to have nightmares paired with the weening. Poor Little Bit. With Gods grace we will all be better soon though.

  13. Thanks for following my blog. I am following you back.
I wasn't able to nurse either of my kids. My daughter was early and had to learn how to suck. It took her weeks.
My son I just didn't produce the way he needed.

  16. My little is 17 months and I still haven't been able to wean her completely. We're down to just nursing down for naps and night time but those are the hardest for me to break. She'll even take it out herself if I don't comply. By that I mean unzip my jacket, open my top and pull on out. SIGH!

  17. I'm into 9 months nursing my 4th baby.... it's such a sweet time and I "dread" our eventual weaning:( Just trying to treasure these last few months of nursing... even when my little man is more interested in everything else besides Mommy's milk:)
