Fondant Fiasco

Little Bit will be one in just a few weeks! I am super excited about planning his first birthday party. I picked out The Very Hungry Caterpillar for the theme.

I went to Target and got the plates, napkins, and other various party things. Hubs paid for it while I had taken Little Bit to the food court to feed him some yogurt. I asked how much it was for all my wonderful goodies. Seventy five dollars. I. Was. Floored. Then I got cheap. Real cheap. I started frantically searching through Google images for pictures of do it yourself caterpillar cakes. They all looked so cute and so easy.

Mom and I immediately took a trip to Micheal's for me to get some fondant and try my luck at cake making. I love baking. Baking cookies, bread, and pies. Cakes historically have not been my thing. I don't like cake so I don't make it. Hubs doesn't really care for it either so I've been off the hook for quite some time.

I came home with all my goodies. This morning Mom and Dad took Little Bit shopping so I set to making a practice cake. I baked the cake and let it cool. Then I chopped of the top of the cake. It was uneven and I knew things were already off to a bad start. I made the butter cream icing and it didn't quite taste right. I forged ahead! Cakes are expensive I told myself. You can make this look respectable I told myself. Then came the fondant. The little tutorials online were full of "go get ums" and "you can do it's." They lied. Plain and simple. Finally after all but beating the fondant with the rolling pin I got it to a nearly flat state. I placed it on the cake and trimmed off the excess. I put little circles around the bottom to try to cover up the botch job I did while removing that excess. Here is the end result...

Mom called me after she took some home. Here is how it went. Me, "Well?." Mom replies, "You don't normally make cakes right?." Me, "nope." Mom, "Perhaps you should buy a cake instead." I hung up with Mom and called the bakery. Alas, just because it looks easy on the interwebs doesn't mean it actually is. Thank the Lord above for bakeries!

  2. Marci the picture actually kind of hides the cakes hideousness. Trust me it was bad. I ended up calling the bakery and they are crazy expensive. I am going to do a cupcake worm instead. Hopefully I don't mess those up ;D I'm sure there will be pictures to follow.

  3. I am so glad I am not the only one that tries these 'easy to do projects,' and makes a mess! Thanks for sharing your experience, but always remember, the kids would have never noticed!

  4. I bet they wouldn't have noticed but I am such a perfectionist. I am on to trying cupcakes now. I got a piping tube today. Tomorrow after church I am going to give it a go. Wish me luck!

  5. I fell for the DYI fondant too and it is a buggar to work with :( It tastes better than the tubs of premade at the store but it is NOT worth the bother.
I like to smooth my buttercream then use small bits of fondant to embellish(it's pretty but tastes icky)

    Goodluck with your cupcakes though!
and thanks for the follow, I'm following back :)

  6. What's with fondant tasting so icky? It is lovely but it sure doesn't taste all that good. I ordered a cake for the catapillar head and I made some practice cupcakes that turned out pretty yummy. I also made a practice cake but I forgot to add water. We had to throw it in the trash. I have a severe case of Mommy brain, lol!
