What do you mean you dont have television???

The title to this post is normally the reaction I get when people hear that hubs and I don't have television service in our home. Obviously we do have the internet. That I cant give up! We made the decision to slim down our expenses and limit the amount of crud we watch by disconnecting our television service around a year ago. We plugged our main computer into the big screen tv and it is now our monitor. We subscribe to the cheapest service of Netflix and I watch the shows I really enjoy on Hulu.com about a week after they air. The only cruddy thing is not getting certain channels that we truly enjoyed watching. We both liked PBS, the Discovery Channel and the BBC. When I saw a giveaway for the LIFE by the BBC come up at Energizer Bunny's Mommy Reports I knew I had to tell Nick. He was pretty excited. We both really dig documentaries especially one as beautiful as this. Another cool thing is that this series is kid friendly. When Little Bit gets a tad older this will be a fun way for him to learn about animals. Have any of you nixed your television service? What were your reasons for disconnecting the devil, err I mean television? Happy watching!

  1. We went through a time with no TV and when we had access to cable again it was insane seeing what is on now adays! Now we just have all the stations blocked on our TV except weather, TLC, HGTV, Discovery, FoxNews, Travel. Sometimes I don't even like them because of the contents of the commercials. I would love to talk my husband into not having that part of the cable service any more!!!

  2. Getting hubby on board took years of gentle persuasion. When I was pregnant with Little Bit we decided that the content on television was not something we wanted our child to see. Sometimes I think that even commercials should be labeled as light porn. It's insane really. Can you block commercials on cable? We always had satellite.

  3. If we had Tivo I think we could block commercials. We don't watch enough to justify the cost and don't watch enough to really justify the cost of cable! Oh well!!! Yep, I agree some commericals are like light porn. ugh!!!

  4. We haven't but we've talked about it so many times. We watch so very little and now with hulu, who needs it?

  5. Your right Debbie. Hulu kind of destroys the need for basic television and basic cable. My reasoning was why pay 60 bucks a month to watch something a week earlier. We save over 700 dollars a year by cutting it off. Nick would like to get a tv antena so he can watch football which honestly I enjoy watching as well. That may be something we invest in before fall.
