Heart of Haiti

This Mother's Day, I was working with Clever Girls in support of Macy's Heart of Haiti to shine a light on the "trade, not aid" program, which provides sustainable income to Haitian artisans struggling to rebuild their lives and support their families after the 2010 earthquake.

Heart of Haiti is an absolutely inspirational program. It made me reflect on how giving mothers are. How completely we give of ourselves. I never understood this truth until I had a child of my own. This Mother's Day I took the time and effort to truly treat my Momma to a special day. I loved on her by making her a gift basket of all the goodies she loves. I took her out to breakfast. Then we went to our the garden festival together and romped around town for hours after that.

I thought about all the years she went without so that I could have all I needed. I think about all the work she put into canning our food. I thought about how she taught me to garden and gave me my own piece of earth from the time I was old enough to dig. My Momma is one special lady.

Thinking on all the ways that she has been a blessing to me I now know that most Momma's feel this same kind of unconditional love for their own babies. How heartbreaking it must be for all those Momma's in Haiti who can give so little to their own precious blessings. Now to be able to be a part of the Heart for Haiti program I am beyond thrilled to share their cause with all of you.

What is Macy’s Heart of Haiti? Heart of Haiti is a “Trade, Not Aid” initiative launched by artist and social entrepreneur, Willa Shalit, The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Macy’s. Already, Heart of Haiti has led to employment of 750 artists in Haiti, providing financial benefits for an estimated 8,500 people in the country.

Each item is a one-of-a-kind design and handmade by a Haitian master artisan from raw materials such as recycled oil drums, wrought iron, papier-mâché and stone. The collection features more than 40 home decor items including quilts, metalwork, ceramics, jewelry and paintings and is made almost entirely from recycled and sustainable items such as old cement bags, cardboard, oil drums and local gommier wood.

Heart of Haiti products are available online at Macy’s.com.

Thank you to Macy's Heart of Haiti for sponsoring my participation in this “Share Your Heart" promotion. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective. All opinions expressed here are my own.

  2. This is such a nice move. I so agree how mothers are so giving. I never understood how my mom would give and do everything for my little siblings before but now that I am a mom myself, everything now made a lot of sense. It's just how mothers are made for.. to give and to love and to care and to nurture and everything that is good and tender in this world :) Your heart is golden, Amy.
